From the Driver’s Seat – A Personal Guide by Neil Forbes
If you’re thinking about visiting Scotland and want the kind of experience that’s relaxed, bespoke, and full of charm, you’re in the right place. I’m Neil Forbes, your chauffeur and storyteller at Saltire Executive Travel — and I’ve spent years helping guests see the best of this country from the comfort of a luxury tour.
Here are some of the questions I’m often asked, and a few insights to help you plan the Scottish trip you’ve been dreaming about.
Planning Your Arrival & Stay
How long should I stay in Scotland to see the highlights? 7–10 days is ideal. That gives you time to explore castles, enjoy the whisky, take in the Highlands, and still have room to breathe.
What’s the best time of year to visit? May to September offers the best weather and longer days. But if you fancy fewer crowds and don’t mind layering up, spring and autumn can be just as magical.
Do I need a visa? Travellers from the US, Canada, Australia and many other countries don’t need a visa for short stays — just a valid passport. They also need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA), to enter the UK.
Experiencing Scotland in Style
Can I stay in a castle? Absolutely. We work with luxury castle hotels and historic manors — places where you’ll feel like you’re part of Scotland’s living history.
Are the tours private? Yes, all our tours are private and tailored to you. You won’t find group buses or generic stops — it’s your own vehicle, your own route, and complete flexibility.
Can I do private whisky tastings? Definitely. I can arrange tastings at distilleries big and small, with behind-the-scenes access and quiet moments to savour each dram.
Navigating Scotland with Confidence
Is it tricky driving in Scotland? It can be, especially with narrow roads and driving on the left. Leave the stress behind — I’ll do the driving while you enjoy the views.
What should I pack? Layers are key. The weather changes often, so a waterproof coat, comfortable shoes, and a warm jumper are wise additions.
Is tipping expected? Tips are appreciated but not required. In restaurants, 10–15% is common. For drivers and guides, it’s always nice but never expected.
